The Recycler is receiving reports that a possible firmware update affecting HP 903xl and 953xl cartridges.
The Recycler understands that a possible firmware update affecting HP 903xl and 953xl cartridges in the United Kingdom market.
Richard Pateman of UK based World of Inks Ltd reports that customers are experiencing problems when installing remanufactured cartridges and the cartridges will not work again until new chips are available.
If the printer is set to automatic update the updates in question allow the installed cartridges to continue to work until they are empty. When installing replacement cartridges, they fail to work. The cartridges are flitted with the v8 chip version.
The updates in question are:
- HP 903xl = MCP2CN2006BR
- HP 953xl = ELLISXLP1N003.2007A.00
A factory reset of the printer shows the latest firmware version is still installed, so a new chip solution will be required.
Customers who have disabled automatic updates are not experiencing the problem. Richard commented: “Yes, customer[s] who turned the firmware off or if there machine was on advise will be fine with the v8 chips, we have tested these on all older versions and they are fine, these firmware would be 1938A (903xl printers) 1942A (953xl) printers. Any chip not v8 we had issues with on the 1938a and 1942a firmware but with v8 all good.”
According to Pateman, updating is an easy mistake to make.
Click “Setup” on printer screen (this looks like a cog or wheel)
- Click on “Printer Maintenance”
- Click on “Update the Printer”
- Click on “Printer Update Options”
- Click on “Do Not Check”
You then need to select “No” on the question that pop up.
“If you clicked yes on last message, it would discard change, we found customers doing this, clicking yes and not no,” Pateman added.
