The Council of the City of Los Angeles filed a Resolution to add to the city’s position on actions that would ban the import and sale of aftermarket, single-use, new-built printer cartridges.

In September 2021 a resolution was filed by Council Member John S. Lee who proposed legislation by the City of Los Angeles, to ban the import and sale of aftermarket, single-use, new built printer cartridges.

In the Resolution Lee describes that the number of new-built, single use cartridges is growing rapidly and adds that “when these imported single-use printer cartridges are removed from printers, they are not classified as e-waste but rather just waste with no value for recyclers or remanufacturers”.

A special meeting was held on 8 March considering the resolution and after an opportunity for public comment was held, the Committee recommended that the Council adopt the Resolution as stated.

Neither the City Administrative Officer nor the Chief Legislative Analyst has not completed a financial analysis of this report.

The last day for the mayor to act is 4 April 2022.
