As the demand for inkjet printers drops, factory workers at the HP Corvallis factory face more furloughs.
Corvallis factory workers face another furlough that starts on the 12th of September, lasts for two weeks, and comes on the back of a twelve-day furlough in July amid falling printer demand.
Local media reports that many of the people working in HP’s Corvallis factory are contract employees hired through staffing firms.
The Corvallis site was opened in the 1970s and currently undertakes research and manufacturing. At its peak, 10,000 employees and contractors worked at the Corvallis site in the inkjet components business. Ten years ago, the workforce had declined to around 2000 employees and contractors.
The COVID pandemic saw a surge in printer demand during a shift to remote work. As the pandemic changed working patterns, HP reported recently that printer and supplies revenues were down 7% and 6%, respectively.
