HP customers upset over new firmware

by | Mar 13, 2023 | 0 comments

Recently, The Recycler reported on a new firmware on some HP devices, blocking the use of third-party supplies.

The firmware blocks third-party cartridges by locking out the chip, resulting in users receiving a new error message when a non-HP chip is detected. The message clarifies that the HP firmware detected a non-HP chip, and that the device is only intended to work with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip.

Users are experiencing a new kind of error message as a non-HP chip is detected. The message now explains exactly that the HP firmware detected a non-HP chip, and that the device is only intended to work with cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip.

When the firmware detects a non-HP chip on the cartridge it will prevent the printer from working until the cartridge has been replaced with one that has a new or reused HP chip.

The Recycler understands that the firmware update was sent out during December 2022 and January 2023, and some media outlets report that it affects the OfficeJet Pro 6970, OfficeJet Pro 6968, OfficeJet 6950, and OfficeJet 7740 series devices (although this has not been confirmed by The Recycler).

In all reports, Users are advised to switch off automatic firmware updates and not to upgrade to this new version if they wish to continue using third-party supplies.

Over the weekend, Media outlets have reported on a Reddit post that has gone viral, in which consumers are complaining about this latest firmware update and HP’s actions.

Have you come across this message, or have you found a solution for third-party supplies? If so, please let us know through emailing news@therecycler.com.
