Gmail and Yahoo to increase email security and spam reduction

In a synchronised move to fortify email security, Gmail and Yahoo are independently rolling out stringent new policies for bulk email senders from February 2024.

Gmail and Yahoo, two of the most influential names in email communication, have independently announced significant policy changes aimed at bolstering email security and reducing spam. Starting February 2024, both platforms are set to enforce stringent new measures for bulk email senders in the quest for a safer, spam-free email environment.

The focus is on strengthening email authentication and spam control. Bulk senders, who send over 5,000 messages daily to either platform, must now authenticate their emails robustly. This move aims to ensure that senders are who they claim to be, addressing a critical vulnerability in email security. Yahoo and Gmail’s AI-driven systems already block billions of unwanted emails daily, providing a formidable defence against spam and phishing attempts.

Another key feature is the simplification of the unsubscribe process. Gmail and Yahoo will mandate a one-click unsubscribe feature, making it effortless for users to opt out of unwanted communications. Bulk senders will be required to process these unsubscribe requests promptly, within two days, further decluttering users’ inboxes.

These changes, supported industry-wide, mark a turning point in email communication, emphasising the universal need for such standards to ensure a safer and more secure email experience across all platforms.

Both Gmail and Yahoo are committed to guiding senders needing to upgrade their systems. This initiative is not a one-off but a continuous effort to maintain a secure, user-friendly, and spam-free email environment.
