EU Green Deal: Progress challenged; adjustments needed

by | Jan 2, 2024 | 0 comments

The EU’s Green Deal sees progress amid challenges and pledges a strong commitment to a sustainable future and a renewed focus on environmental objectives despite geopolitical pressures.

The European Union’s commitment to its Green Deal and the objectives outlined in the 8th Environment Action Programme (8EAP) is influenced by various factors, including upcoming legislation and current geopolitical challenges. The first progress report on the 8EAP from the European Environment Agency highlights significant hurdles in meeting several 2030 environmental goals, such as overshooting primary energy consumption targets, undershooting renewable energy targets and failing to double the use of recycled material. However, the report also indicates likely success in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels??.

In addition to these challenges, the EU’s focus is also affected by the geopolitical situation, particularly the war in Ukraine. This has led to a shift in funding, with billions of euros initially allocated for the Green Deal being redirected towards defence, migration, and energy diversification. This reallocation reflects the EU’s need to balance long-term environmental goals with immediate geopolitical and economic necessities.

Furthermore, the EU is preparing for new legislation that could significantly impact various sectors, including office consumables and printers. Anticipated early next year, draft ecolabelling legislation is expected to introduce new environmental standards and requirements for office printers. This legislation aligns with the EU’s broader efforts to promote sustainability and reduce environmental impact across different industries. Introducing such standards is part of the EU’s strategy to encourage more eco-friendly practices in the commercial sector and drive the market towards more sustainable products.

While the EU shows progress in certain areas like greenhouse gas emission reductions, the full realization of the Green Deal’s 2030 objectives faces significant challenges. The success of these initiatives will depend on the EU’s ability to effectively implement its policies and adapt to changing global circumstances while maintaining a solid commitment to environmental and climate goals.
