Silicone shortage hits Sun Chemical

The company’s North American division is feeling the effect of its suppliers raising their prices.

Sun Chemical is set to raise its prices by 35% on its entire silicone-based North American product line owing to a “massive shortage in silicones and silicone-based materials from manufacturers”, reports Tony Curcio of Graphic Arts magazine.

The company, which produces printing inks as well as both liquid and solid compounds, and application materials, is a subsidiary of Sun Chemical Group Coöperatief U.A, and has sales of over $7.5 billion (€6.2 billion) annually.

Dennis Sweet, Sun Chemical’s Vice President of Commercial, Rycoline and Distributors, North American Inks, said: “Because of the silicone shortage we’re seeing in the industry, our suppliers have passed on prices increases beyond anything we’ve seen in recent years. While Sun Chemical has utilised all its resources to offset these shortages and increases, it has now become necessary to pass some of these increases on.”
