Plastic waste recycling initiative launched

WRAP has formed a partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to launch a new initiative aimed at fighting plastic waste pollution.

As Alex Bean of rebnews reports, the two organisations have formed a collaboration, in order to “fight plastic pollution and change the UK plastics infrastructure”.

The goal is to move toward a circular economy, “where plastic never becomes waste”, and the initiative will involve organisations from all areas of society, including “businesses, industry, governments, local authorities, NGO’s, media and society”.

WRAP has noted that “a system change is needed to eliminate plastic from the ocean and economy” and that “for plastic never to become waste, it is vital that everyone from industries producing the material” should be involved in the initiative.

The aims of the collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation include:

  • Stopping “unnecessary and problematic single-use plastic packaging”
  • Ensuring “all plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable”
  • Increasing the “collection and recycling of plastic packaging”
  • Increasing “recycled content in plastic packaging to push demand for recycled material.”
  • Allowing “citizens to play a part in reducing plastic packaging waste and litter.”

WRAP chief executive Marcus Gover said: “I am pleased to be leading this holistic initiative which will transform the UK’s plastics system. Working with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, we will bring together every ‘body, business and organisation’ involved in the life-cycle of plastics to make the move from a throw away culture to one where resources are used over and over again.”
