As a result of Brexit, it has been revealed that UK residents and companies will no longer be able to use domain names ending with .eu.
According to The Verge, the European Commission announced that “after Brexit, any and all UK citizens and companies will be barred from owning .eu domain names.”
In a letter addressed to stakeholders, the Commission wrote:
“As of the withdrawal date, undertakings and organizations that are established in the United Kingdom but not in the EU and natural persons who reside in the United Kingdom will no longer be eligible to register [or renew] .eu domain names.”
While there is no set deadline for the removal of these domain names, it is expected that it will take place on the date that has been set for Brexit, which currently falls on 30 March 2019.
While the barring of .eu domain names will not have “a catastrophic impact”, there are 317,000 .eu domains believed to be registered in the UK, and these will be affected by the changes.
