EURid suspends 80,000 UK run .eu websites following Brexit rule change on 1st January.
EURid, which manages the European Union domain name, has suspended tens of thousands of UK run .eu websites under new rules that came into force on 1 January.
The suspended domain names can no longer support a website or service like email, and owners now have three months to prove their right to run a .eu domain. Domain owners have until the 31st March 2021 to update their contact details to an EU-subsidiary outside the UK; use an EU based representative or declare citizenship or residence of an EU member state and have their domain names re-instated.
After the 31st March 2021, if domain owners have not demonstrated their eligibility for a .eu domain, will see their domain name withdrawn. Revoked domain names and will become available for general registration.
On 1 January 2021, EURid emailed all UK registrants and their registrars that their domain name is no longer compliant with the .eu regulatory framework and was suspended and can no longer support any service (such as website and email), but may still be reinstated if registration data is updated to meet the eligibility criteria.
European Union citizens who are residing in the United Kingdom are eligible to hold a .eu domain name provided they update their registration data with their EU citizenship. You can find out how to do this here.
United Kingdom citizens residing in a European Union Member State remain eligible to hold a .eu domain name after the transition period based on their residence. However, United Kingdom citizens residing outside of the Union Member States, will no longer be eligible to hold a .eu domain name after the end of the transition period.
