Last month, a Canadian national, 28, was remanded in custody in Auckland, NZ, having been caught attempting to smuggle 18kg of methamphetamine into the country in a batch of printer toner cartridges.
As tvnz reported, the Canadian national was “charged with the importation and possession for supply of a class A controlled drug”, an offence which carries the maximum penalty of a life sentence in prison.
He was arrested after Customs officers discovered the 18kg of meth hidden in a consignment of printer toner cartridges shipped from the USA. The street value of the drugs was estimated to be between $6 million (€4.8 million) and $21 million (€17 million).
The 28-year-old, who had been in New Zealand for two months, was arrested at a property in Auckland and appeared at the Manukau District Court, where he was remanded in custody.
