On 15 January 2022, a large-scale volcanic eruption and resulting tsunami caused extensive damage and loss of life in the Kingdom of Tonga.

To aid in the relief efforts for the victims, the Canon Group is making a donation of ¥10 million (approximately $86,610/ €76,905) to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

The company said: “We at Canon would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this disaster and our thoughts go out to those suffering in its aftermath.

While we realise that the road to recovery will be challenging and time-consuming, we hope that the region will soon be able to begin the rebuilding and healing process.”

Many Tongan athletes have played for Canon’s rugby team, the Yokohama Canon Eagles, and four are currently on the team roster. The team collected donations for the relief effort during a recent match held on 23 January and plans to continue collecting money for the cause. Money raised by the Yokohama Canon Eagles and other teams will be collected and donated via the Japan Rugby Football Union and Japan Rugby League One.
