The American division of the OEM has won the Best Office Building for its Long Island premises in New York.

The honour was dispensed by the Long Island Business News, and voted on by readers. The winning building is situated at One Canon Park in Melville, NY, and was first opened in February 2013.

The building, home to the OEM’s US, Caribbean, and Latin American operations, features modern amenities across its 52-acre campus, including plentiful green space, a walking trail, and two retention ponds.

Located just off the Long Island Expressway, the five-storey, 700,000 square foot site also features a showroom, learning centre, cafeteria, fitness centre, and a variety of other facilities.

The building is over 500 feet long and almost 300 feet wide, and “reflects Canon’s strong commitment to environmental sustainability,” according to the OEM, “keeping in line with its philosophy of Kyosei.” 40.8 percent of the total building materials by value have been manufactured using recycled materials.

The site’s environmentally efficient features include open glass spaces, providing three-quarters of regularly occupied spaces with natural light; plentiful provision for alternative transport, such as 136 bicycle racks, reserved parking for low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles, and 22 electric car charging points; efficient plumbing designed to reduce water consumption by 35 percent; and two parking garages, to reduce the amount of asphalt on the grounds, resulting in a smaller footprint.

One Canon Park has also received LEED Gold certification, which recognises the design, construction, operations and maintenance of high-performance green buildings. Canon claims that it is “the largest commercial property on Long Island to achieve this level of LEED.”

Seymour Liebman, Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer, and General Counsel at Canon USA, said: “Our headquarters is the result of a long journey for Canon, which for many years had been searching for a suitable location to establish a new home on Long Island. We are incredibly proud of our Melville facility, which is recognisable to anyone who drives on the Long Island Expressway. When designing this building, a variety of factors were taken into account, from providing a positive work experience for our employees to environmental sustainability, as well as maintaining strong relationships with the surrounding community.”

He added: “On behalf of Canon, I’d like to extend gratitude to the Long Island Business News and their readers for this honour.”

“Congratulations to Canon USA for its Melville headquarters being voted as Long Island’s Best Office Building in Long Island Business News’ second annual Reader Rankings program,” said Joe Giametta, Publisher of the Long Island Business News. “The Reader Rankings is an initiative designed to provide an inside look at the companies and services that LIBN readers rated highly across a broad range of categories. LIBN‘s 2018 Reader Rankings survey generated hundreds of responses from business professionals across our region and reflected the perspectives of our readers, informed professionals and business leaders in determining which organisations best support our business community. Each business that was recognised exemplifies the unique characteristics of Long Island’s robust economic landscape and raises the bar for progress and growth within each of Long Island’s communities.”
