ETIAS pushed back to 2024

It will be 2024 at the earliest before the European Union implements its ETIAS travel system for non-EU visitors until 2024.

The European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) is a new visa waiver system that is set to be implemented by the European Union (EU) in 2024 according to the ETIAS website.

The ETIAS system will require visitors from countries that do not require a visa to enter the Schengen area to apply for an electronic travel authorization before they travel. It is expected to cost €7 ($7.43) and last for three years.

The introduction of the ETIAS system has been delayed several times. Originally, it was due to be implemented in 2020, but this was postponed several times. In August 2022, it was announced that the system would be now introduced in November 2023. However, this deadline has now been pushed back again to 2024.

The delay in introducing the ETIAS system is partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused significant disruptions to travel and led to a decline in tourist numbers. As a result, there has been less urgency to implement the system. In addition, there have been technical challenges associated with developing and testing the system, which has contributed to the delay.

Despite the delay, the EU remains committed to introducing the ETIAS system. The system is seen as an important tool for improving the security of the Schengen area and for managing migration flows. It will also help to facilitate travel for visitors who do not require a visa, by reducing the time and paperwork associated with the current system.
