The EU’s main legislative body adopted the document, examining the technology and its consequences for IP, on the 3rd of July.
The resolution, entitled ‘Three-dimensional printing: A challenge in the fields of intellectual property rights and civil liability’, begins by asserting that the technology “could be of great benefit to the European economy”, reports Lutz Riede for Lexology.
The document examines the legal issues associated with 3D printing, particularly with concern for protecting IP rights; it calls for the European Commission to consider civil liability issues more closely, suggesting it sets up “a specific liability regime.”
The rise of 3D printing may mean the European Union has to adopt new laws, and amend existing ones, to take the technology into account, the European Parliament has suggested.
