In a policy shift, HP introduces SecuReuse to enable the use of third-party remanufactured cartridges in HP printers.
In an evolving effort towards sustainability, HP has introduced its innovative “SecuReuse” solution, as Eduardo Macias, Vice President of Consumer Print Supplies at HP, revealed in an exclusive interview with The Recycler.
This is a significant shift in HP’s approach to using remanufactured print consumables in its print devices has led to the company’s exclusive disclosure of details of its “SecuReuse” solution to The Recycler. Macias explained that the program will enable the reuse of genuine HP cartridges, aligning with the principles of the circular economy.
HP has historically recommended original cartridges to ensure reliability and optimal print quality, often citing the inferior performance of remanufactured alternatives. With the SecuReuse program, HP is now fostering an environment that supports the reuse of its cartridges in the EMEA region, particularly benefiting EU remanufacturers.
This initiative is expected to expand the lifecycle of printer cartridges and provide a platform for remanufacturers to engage with HP’s technologies without the risk of intellectual property infringement.
In collaboration with aftermarket partners KMP, ALTKIN and Peach, the solution is expected to be rolled out in late 2025/ early 2026 and has been designed to be user-friendly for remanufacturers, requiring a targeted low initial investment. HP believes this will be <€100 + a PC per station to access necessary APIs, reset technology, and firmware. The solution also ensures compatibility and security enhancements for end-users, offering a seamless experience with alerts on ink and toner levels and unique installation messages.
The solution requires a genuine, unmodified empty cartridge with an HP chip installed. The SecuReuse program uses OEM IP on the chip, eliminating the need for a chip inventory and remanufacturers will have a choice with capabilities to fill and reset A ? A, X ? X, A ? X, X ? A, Starter Cartridge? A or X and the solution works with Original HP Chip, HP+ e-series, MPS and Instant Ink. Using the SecuReuse program will ensure that there is no risk of infringing HP’s intellectual property.

HP’s launch of the SecuReuse solution is timely, aligning with the anticipation of new EU legislation aimed at the office imaging sector. This forthcoming regulation is expected to enforce stricter sustainability and waste reduction standards across the industry. HP’s initiative pre-empts these regulatory changes.
Our take on this: On the surface this is a big about turn for HP and is to be commended. But with all these matters, the devil is in the detail. What will the legislation look like, how will this scheme fit in and just how many companies will on board with this HP solution?
