HP’s instant ink in the dock again

Consumers leaving the HP Instant Ink programme find their printers are still locked to HP.

UK customers who enrolled with HP’s instant ink programme are facing a critical issue when they cancel their subscription. The printer remains locked to the firmware auto update setting that the consumer cannot turn off.

According to Richard Pateman of UK based World of Inks Ltd, “The issue we see is that people sign up for the 3 month free period, and then cancel but then cannot access the firmware settings due to the feature being locked. The message states, this printer is locked to instant ink, even though customer has cancelled months ago, we even tried the factory reset, still no luck, disabled web services, again same message that it’s on AUTO.”

Another problem is that “we have had many customers, one today who cannot turn off firmware as it is locked to printer, so we have the new chips on the 953xl. BUT when next updates happen, the customer will have to go back to originals until new chips work with latest firmware, it seems at present time they [HP] are doing nearly every 3 months. Issues with firmware updates every 3 months and blocking microchips is a nightmare.”
