KYOCERA promotes importance of data protection

KYOCERA Document Solutions Europe has been highlighting the centrality of data protection, by way of marking the 12th edition of Data Privacy Day on 28 January 2019.

“Organisations must make data protection a central part of their business strategy. The implementation of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation has opened the eyes of many companies to the importance of compliance, but a huge proportion of the market are yet to recognise the role that security can have on the reputation of a company,” says Owais Ahmed, European Information Security Officer at KYOCERA Document Solutions Europe.

KYOCERA reiterates that the company is constantly striving to maintain their position as a leader in providing the latest security standards to meet clients’ and stakeholders’ expectations. This was shown by the awarding of the ISMS Cloud Security Certification in 2017, states the OEM.

One of the most important dates on the calendar for KYOCERA is 28th January, which this year recognises the 12th edition of Data Privacy Day. Since its foundation in 2007, firms have become more and more aware of their responsibilities and the importance of protecting that information. With new technology providing new ways to safeguard this data, it also creates new security threats.

For businesses, this means they need to invest in further enhancing their data security, with the goal of protecting their customers’ privacy rights. This is why KYOCERA is constantly monitoring the latest trends in security, declares the OEM, while striving towards making its products and solutions as safe as possible.

“Failure to safeguard consumer or business data not only hits the trust in a company, but also leads to lower customer satisfaction and can have a major impact,” adds Ahmed, explaining the true value of data privacy.

A 2018 survey by the Direct Marketing Association found that 86 percent of consumers want more control over the use and storage of their personal information, yet many companies are still slow to catch up in how they are protecting crucial information. Whether it is a client’s personal data or internal company information, securing this data must be a major objective for businesses in 2019, says the OEM.

KYOCERA continues, “There are general measures that should form a part of the overall business security strategy, such as proper training of the employees and the protection of networks, but it must also not be forgotten that connected devices such as printers and MFPs play a crucial role in the use and storage of data.”

“It is important to protect your information through access authorisation and network security, though printers and MFPs are an aspect of data transfer which is often not prioritised by organisations. KYOCERA provides the tools needed to ensure that employees can print securely,” explains Ahmed.

As KYOCERA explains, printers process large amounts of data, much of which is sensitive information. This is stored in various elements, including a hard-disk, SD card, an image on a drum, RAM or on physical paper. This must be protected to ensure data is erased before being removed from the network, reducing a risk of unauthorised access.
