The Recycler has learned that HP has issued its latest firmware update on 28 October, which seems to be locking out third party cartridges with the latest chips.

The Recycler was contacted with the information that HP has issued another firmware update that effects third party replacement cartridges for printers using 903XL cartridges. The latest firmware number is MPC2CN2042CR and seems to lock out cartridges using the latest chips.

After testing it was confirmed this was printers using the 903XL cartridges only and not printers using 953XL cartridges, which seem to continue to work at the moment. Previously HP’s firmware updates blocked out cartridges on both printer model series at the same time.

To check your current firmware status, print a status page from the LCD screen menu, this can be found in reports. this will have the firmware version on it.

To turn off automatic firmware updates:

  • Click “Setup” on printer screen (this looks like a cog or wheel)
  • Click on “Printer Maintenance”
  • Click on “Update the Printer”
  • Click on “Printer Update Options”
  • Click on “Do Not Check”

You then need to select “No” on the question that pops up.

If you clicked yes on the last message, it would discard the change.

Are you affected by this firmware upgrade? If so let us know. You can connect with us by email at news@therecycler.com.
