The OEM’s firmware has been in the news on a regular basis over the last few weeks, as more companies continue to offer warnings and advice to disgruntled customers.
Following in the footsteps of 123inkt, who successfully saw off HP in a Dutch court, Ink Hub, Cartridge World and further companies have been speaking out about HP’s recent firmware update.
Among them is MAXIM-VERSAND Druckerpatronen, helmed by Daniel C. Grosch. Grosch contacted The Recycler revealing his company has made a YouTube video for their German and Austrian customers to inform them about the update (see above).
In addition, Richard Pateman of World of Inks has issued a warning of his own, explaining “printers that have the issues of firmware have automatically updated, if you print a test page, this will have the firmware version on, the firmware in question has 1910 at the end,” saying that HP has “been a little more clever” with this particular update.
He revealed that the affected printers include HP’s Officejet Pro 6950, 6960, 6970, 6975, 7720, 7730, 774, 8210, 8218, 8710, 8715, 8716, 8718, 8720, 8725, 8728, 8730 and 8740 models, as well as HP’s Page Wide Pro 452dw, 452dwt, 477dw, and 477dwt models, all printers that take the 903, 953, 971 cartridges.
In conversation with The Recycler, Pateman explained that “with the new firmware update, ink cartridges already in the printer will still work until they are empty” and that “most printers we are finding are sadly on automatic update”. He went on to express his frustration at the lack of comment from suppliers in the aftermarket industry.
