New inkjet improves egg traceability

Markem-Imaje’s new inkjet printer is customised for egg production, and can print a quarter of a million eggs every hour.

Egg-printing is a vital step in the production process, with the printed codes containing a range of safety and traceability information, including best before dates, farm identification, and often company logos. In many countries, this information is a legal obligation.

According to Ink World, Markem-Imaje’s new 9450 coder, which is now certified for use on Moba machines, does not require an external PC in order to operate, and offers a range of additional features specific to this model.

These include: A 7-inch colour touch screen with operational capacities and an online-guiding system, saving the user time when changing cartridges; software monitoring consumable consumption and running costs; an easy-to-clean, “trouble-free” printhead design; an automatic cleaning system; and an energy-usage and ink-consumption optimisation design, which it is claimed enables users “to cut these expenses up to 20 percent.”

It also offers a ‘smart consumable system’, wherein a built-in sensor prevents the insertion of incorrect ink and/or cartridges, saving the user from time (and money consuming downtime.

It is available in Europe and North America and can print in pink or blue food grade ink onto white or brown eggs.

“In times when food traceability and security are paramount, Markem-Imaje’s inkjet egg solution is the perfect choice,” said Gary Bolton, Continuous Inkjet product marketing manager. “Its food-grade compliant inks and consistently top quality prints meet traceability requirements while still accommodating the fastest production speeds and ensuring high uptime in terms of installation, use and consumption.”

“Egg recalls relating to health concerns with salmonella have shown that traceability is vital to protecting a brand’s reputation,” Bolton added. “Not printing codes onto eggs, or having ones which are unreadable, can have costly consequences to the provider of eggs.”
