The state’s police force is warning businesses located in Lane County to be wary of “potential scammers”, according to KVAL.
“It’s kind of old-fashioned, really; it’s a classic,” Crime Prevention Specialist Debbie Janacek says.
The con consists of scammers phoning a business, pretending to be from a company “related to the business or printer”. They will usually ask questions about the printer type and even the printer serial number used by the business they are contacting. In addition, they may ask the name of “whoever is in charge of purchasing at the company.”
“They might get somebody on the phone who might not be the person who orders those supplies, or doesn’t have an intimate knowledge of purchasing,” explains Janacek.
Once furnished with the information required, the scammer will then invoice the company for an imaginary printer and receive the funds when the company settles what it thinks is a genuine invoice.
“I think it’s really important that if someone is calling you at your home or your business, you know who you’re talking to, and what they’re really needing,” says Janacek.
