The European Commission launches public consultation to evaluate EU rules.
Directorate-General for Justice and Consumers is currently evaluating the Environmental Crime Directive (Directive 2008/99/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 19 November 2008) on the protection of the environment through criminal law and whether it has achieved its objectives.
The objective of the Directive is to contribute to a more effective protection of the environment and full application of the existing environmental EU legislation through criminal law. It aims at ensuring a level playing field in the Member States by approximating the criminalisation of environmental offenses and ensuring deterrent sanction levels in all Member States.
The Commission seeks to gather input from a broad range of stakeholders, including public authorities and administrations at national, regional and local level, environmental non-governmental organisations, professionals in environment protection, business associations, academics, lawyers and law-firms, interest organisations and private individuals.
The open public consultation will be open until 2 January. It is published in all EU languages and will end on 2 January. The consultation assesses the results from all Member States for the time the Directive has been applicable, from 2011 to 2018.
