Collection data for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) for the third quarter of 2019 in the UK shows that recycling targets could be missed for third year running.
Letsrecycle.com analysed WEEE collection figures for the third quarter of 2019 from the Environment Agency in the UK which show “a total of 131,190 tonnes of WEEE was collected during the third quarter of the year, up from 126,366 in the same period last year.”
In the first two quarters 245,227 tonnes of WEEE were collected so the current total for 2019 stands at 376,417 tonnes but the target was set as 550,577 tonnes.
Finance Director at WEEE producer compliance scheme REPIC, Louise Grantham told Letsrecycle.com: “As with the previous quarter’s collection figures, the latest household WEEE data shows that challenges remain in achieving the 2019 household WEEE collection targets across most WEEE categories. Whilst it is encouraging that household cooling collections are now running on target, overall it looks likely that the UK will fall short of the target in most other categories. EEE POM has increased; however, this is mostly likely to be related to the move to open scope.”
DEFRA might impose compliance fees for the missed targets, as it stands, WEEE collection for 2019 will be around 68% of the targeted tonnage.
